Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christians. Christmas is celebrated all over with families, friends and loved ones.

There are a lot more fun facts about Christmas than we know. While unwrapping of gifts kept under the Christmas tree, decorating the house with Christmas lights and greeting cards are all known facts, I would like to share more with you. Christmas is an age-old celebration with centuries of tradition and meaning behind it. So, take a deep breathe from the excitement of this holiday season and learn some of these fun facts about Christmas. They’ll come in handy!

Did you know that:

  • The oldest artificial Christmas trees date back to the late 1800s and were made of green raffia (think grass hula skirts) or dyed goose feathers. Next, the Addis Brush Company used their machinery that wove toilet brushes to create pine-like branches for artificial Christmas trees that were less flammable and could hold heavier decorations.

  • ‘Jingle Bells’– the popular Christmas song was composed by James Pierpont in Massachusetts, America.
  • Other names of Christmas from the old times include – ‘Midwinter’, ‘Nativity’ and ‘Yule’.  Therefore, the Christmas tree is also referred to as “Yule tree”.
  • The largest floating Christmas tree in the world— 278 feet tall — is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
  • The tallest Christmas tree ever displayed was in Seattle Washington. It measured 221 ft. tall.
  • Jingle bells was originally a song for Thanksgiving in 1857. It was also the first song that was ever played in space by astronauts
  • Christmas came from the word ‘christes maesse’ which means ‘mass of Christ’ which was therefore shortened to ‘Christmas’
  • Christmas trees usually grow for 15 years before they can be sold.
  • Franklin Pierce was the first president who put up an official white house Christmas tree.
  • The “X” in ‘X-mas’ is actually not an abbreviation. Its “Chi” Greek word for Christ.
  • Boxing Day is the day right after Christmas. This December 26 holiday is a day of giving to the less fortunate and charitable institutions in the form of money and gifts. Some will spend the day doing volunteer work. It is called Boxing Day because it was the custom during those days for tradesmen to collect their Christmas boxes (gifts) in return for their good and reliable service throughout the year.

I’m sure we have all learned something new about Christmas today! I wish all Christmas lovers a very merry Christmas!
