Buying a car in Cotonou does not have to mean paying the full price in cash on day one. Beninfo247 works with dealer and bank partners to finance your car. This page explains the three ways car financing works in Benin, who usually qualifies, which papers to prepare, and how we help you get an answer quickly.
Dealer credit. You choose the car at the dealer, and the dealer arranges the payment plan, often with a partner bank. You deal with one place for the car, the papers and the payments.
A bank vehicle loan. The bank lends you the money and pays the dealer directly against a pro forma invoice. You repay the bank every month, usually from your salary. You own the car, and the bank asks for insurance on the loan and on the car.
Leasing (crédit-bail). A finance company or bank buys the car and puts it at your disposal for a fixed period. It stays the owner during the contract. At the end you can usually buy the car at a price fixed when you signed, or give it back. Businesses use it most, for example small firms financing transport vehicles.
Which one fits depends on who you are. A salaried worker paid into a bank account in Benin fits the bank-loan rules below. A business that needs vehicles for its work can look at leasing. If you want one contact for the car and the payments, start with dealer credit.
Each partner sets its own rules, and most of them don't publish their terms. One bank does publish them. Bank of Africa Bénin's Prêt Véhicule, for a new car bought from a dealer it has an agreement with, asks that you:
are 21 to 60 years old at the end of the loan;
hold a current account with Bank of Africa and have your salary paid into it, with an irrevocable salary transfer (domiciliation irrévocable de salaire);
take out the insurance linked to the loan and to the vehicle.
Repayment runs for up to 83 months. The amount depends on how much of your salary can go to repayments (the quotité cessible). The bank's advisers give the exact amount, fees, rate and insurance premium.
For the other partners, terms are on request: send us your situation and we ask for you.
For a bank vehicle loan, Bank of Africa Bénin lists these documents:
a handwritten loan request;
copies of your last 3 payslips;
a certificate of employment (attestation de validité de service);
the irrevocable salary transfer;
a pro forma invoice for the car;
a payment order in favour of the dealer;
a copy of a valid ID.
The bank says other documents may be needed. Other banks and dealers ask for similar papers. Have your payslips, ID and the pro forma ready before you apply, and the answer comes faster.
Beninfo247 works with dealer and bank partners to finance your car, among them:
Dealers
CFAO / Toyota ("Sika Toyota CFAO"): car financing with Beninfo247.
Sion Car Benin: car financing.
Les Bagnoles: car financing.
Banks
Bank of Africa Bénin: a dedicated vehicle loan (Prêt Véhicule) for new cars from its partner dealers, up to 83 months.
Ecobank Bénin: asset financing and leasing for company fleets and qualified retail clients. Terms on request.
NSIA Banque Bénin: crédit-bail (leasing), mainly for SMEs financing transport vehicles. Terms on request.
Société Générale Bénin: retail financing for private vehicles, with flexible repayment. Terms on request.
And more. Rates, deposits and durations change, and most partners quote them case by case. We never quote a rate a partner hasn't given you in writing.
Tell us what you need. The car (or your budget), whether you are salaried or a business, and your bank. One WhatsApp message is enough.
We match you with the right partner. A dealer, a bank or a leasing offer, based on your situation. We tell you which documents that partner wants.
You get the partner's offer, and you decide. We follow up with the partner until you have an answer.
Henry Okooboh's team at Beninfo247 has served more than 10,000 clients over the years, in admissions, cars and more (Henry's figure).
Financing through our partners is for cars registered and used in Benin. Nigeria has banned vehicle imports through its land borders since January 2017, so don't plan to drive a financed car from Cotonou to Nigeria. If you live in Nigeria and want a car, talk to us first about what is legal.
Can I buy a car on credit in Cotonou?
Yes. Dealers work with banks, and some banks have a dedicated vehicle loan. Bank of Africa Bénin's Prêt Véhicule, for example, finances new cars from its partner dealers over up to 83 months.
What is the interest rate on a car loan in Benin?
Most partners don't publish their rates. They depend on the bank, your salary and the car. Ask for a written offer before you sign. We'll get it for you.
Do I need a deposit?
It depends on the partner and the car. No partner on this page publishes a fixed deposit, so ask for it in the written offer.
Can a business lease vehicles?
Yes. Leasing (crédit-bail) is mainly used by businesses. NSIA Banque Bénin and Ecobank Bénin offer it for company vehicles; terms on request.
Can I finance a used (tokunbo) car?
Bank of Africa Bénin's published Prêt Véhicule is for new cars from partner dealers. For a used car, ask us: some dealers and banks look at it case by case. Read our cars page for the cars we sell.
