If you search for the best universities in Cotonou, you will find many lists, and most of them answer the wrong question. This guide is for Nigerian and other English-speaking students looking at private universities and degree pathways in Cotonou. Benin's public universities (UAC, Parakou, UNSTIM and UNA) are different institutions with different admission systems, and each will have its own article on Beninfo247.
These are the schools Beninfo247 recommends. All ten are accredited and verified by us, and their students served NYSC before Nigeria's January 2024 suspension. Our 2026 top 10 private options in Cotonou are:
Leadpreneur Academy
EPS La Cité
IUMA University
HEGT University
ESAE University
IRGIB Africa University
ESCAE Benin University
Bestower International University
ISCOM University
ESM Benin
One thing to know before you apply: Nigeria's evaluation of Benin and Togo degrees for NYSC is currently suspended. Your school's licence and courses are not affected. See the section below on the NYSC suspension. Before paying any school, you can also verify the institution and the exact programme.
We looked at fit for Nigerian and English-speaking students, programme range, our own experience placing students, and how clearly each school explains who awards the degree. Every school here is accredited and verified by Beninfo247, and students from these schools went on to serve NYSC before the suspension described below. Our partner schools come first: we place students there every year and know their programmes, fees and support from the inside.
Leadpreneur Academy is a leadership and entrepreneurship academy in Cotonou that delivers technical courses, bachelor's degrees and master's degrees through online and on-campus study. It describes itself as a learning platform that works with partner universities in Benin, Cameroon, Togo, the United States and Asia, and the partner university awards the certificate at the end of the programme. Its guiding principle is "Learn, Grow, Develop", and its stated aim is to remove the cost, time and location barriers that stop people from getting a degree.
Why it is first. The multi-partner model gives students a choice of pathways instead of tying them to one institution. Students can study online or on campus, keep working while they study, and get admissions guidance and student support built in. Read more in what you should know about Leadpreneur Academy, see the online degree programme page, and learn how to get admission into Leadpreneur Academy.
Suits: Nigerian students who want flexibility, working adults, and students who want guided admission. Confirm: the exact partner university that awards your degree, its country, the study mode (online or on campus), the programme duration and the current fees.

On 3 January 2024, Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Education suspended the accreditation of degree certificates from universities in Benin Republic and Togo, after an investigation into certificate racketeering. You can read the report and the list of affected universities at TheNigeriaLawyer, and our own page on the Nigerian government suspension.
Here is what that means for you:
It is temporary. The resolution process is ongoing. Beninfo247 understands that the government has agreed to resolve it and that the remaining step is the Ministry of Education's public statement allowing graduates to proceed. On 11 March 2026, a House of Representatives committee recommended that the blanket invalidation be rescinded and replaced with case-by-case verification (report).
It only affects NYSC. Until it is resolved, graduates of Benin and Togo universities cannot be mobilised for NYSC. After it is resolved, they can continue.
Licences are not revoked and courses have not stopped. The suspension is a Nigerian decision about certificate evaluation. It is not a Benin decision. The schools on this list continue to operate and teach.
Before the suspension, students from these schools served NYSC. We expect the programmes to continue as normal once the matter is settled.
Our advice: you can study now, and plan to serve once the Ministry confirms. For the full explanation, read NYSC and Nigerian recognition for Benin Republic degrees.
