Computer Engineering as a Course – Why You Should Study Computer Engineering as a Course In The University

Computer Engineering as a Course. The University level is like a wake- up call. It gives you this feeling like “hey, you are a grown up now!” While the feeling is exciting, deciding on a course to study in the university has been quite a challenge that students face after the secondary school education. While some find it easy to decide on what career path to follow, others have issues knowing just where to fit in. The sole purpose of this write-up is for the enlightenment of students. knowing all about the course you choose to study before getting into the university helps to be sure of what you are getting into. If you are interested in studying Computer Engineering as a Course, I hope you find this useful as you read through.

What is computer engineering?

Computer engineering is a field that integrates several fields of discipline of computer science and electrical engineering required to develop computer hardware and software.

Computer engineering exists at the intersection of technology and innovation. A dynamic professional field, computer engineering offers varied career paths in both hardware engineering (e.g. microprocessors) and software development—each which drive computing advances in industries ranging from aerospace to healthcare. The following guide provides a high-level overview of computer engineering, including a look at different degree and career paths, related skills and technologies, earning potential and employment outlook.

Computer engineering has two (2) major specialties, which are;

  1. Computer hardware engineering
  2. Computer software engineering

  • Computer hardware engineering: Most computer hardware engineers research, develop, design, and test various computer equipment. This can range from circuit boards and microprocessors to routers. Some update existing computer equipment to be more efficient and work with newer software. Most computer hardware engineers work in research laboratories and high-tech manufacturing firms.

  • Computer Software engineering: Computer software engineers develop, design, and test software. They construct, and maintain computer programs, as well as set up networks such as intranets for companies. They also design or code new applications to meet the needs of a business or an individual.  Some software engineers work independently as freelancers and sell their software products/applications to an enterprise or individual.

What do computer engineers do?

computer engineers work in coding, cryptography and information protection to develop new methods of protecting various information such as digital images and music. Some examples include; work on wireless communications, multi-antenna systems, optical transmission and digital watermarking.

Here’s a list of some career paths computer engineering graduates

  • computer programmer
  • electrical engineer
  • industrial engineer
  • computer systems analyst
  • computer user support specialist
  • web developer
  • computer network architect
  • information security analyst.

It is also important for computer engineers to keep up with rapid advances in technology. Therefore, many continue learning throughout their careers. This can be helpful, especially when it comes to learning new skills or improving existing ones. For example, as the relative cost of fixing a bug increases the further along it is in the software development cycle, there can be greater cost savings attributed to developing and testing for quality code as soon as possible in the process, and particularly before release.
