Fidjrossè Beach, Cotonou: A Weekend Guide

  • @Beninfo24/7

Ask anyone in Cotonou where to go on a Sunday evening and Fidjrossè will come up. It is the long beach west of the city centre, between the airport and the Route des Pêches. People come to walk, run, eat grilled fish, meet friends and watch the sun go down over the Atlantic.

This guide covers where the beach is, how to get there, where to eat and sleep nearby, and the one thing you must take seriously: the sea. The road route from four landmarks is on the Plage de Fidjrossè page on Ceety Boy.

Where Fidjrossè beach is

Plage de Fidjrossè is the name the government uses for Cotonou's western coast. It sits in the Fidjrossè neighbourhood, close to the Aéroport Bernardin Gantin: about 2.2 km from the airport in a straight line. The Route des Pêches runs along this coast to the west.

It is one of several beaches in Cotonou. Going west to east you have Togbin, Fidjrossè, Obama Beach near the centre, the Xwlacodji Plage quarter, and Eldorado beach in the Jak quarter of Akpakpa.

How to get there

By road, from the nearest landmarks:

  • From the airport: about 3.0 km, via the Route des Pêches to the Carrefour Plage de Fidjrossé.

  • From Haie Vive: about 4.0 km, through the small streets to the Boulevard de la Marina, then the Route des Pêches.

  • From the Centre International de Conférences: about 4.5 km, along the Boulevard de la Marina and the Route des Pêches.

  • From Cadjèhoun: about 4.8 km.

Tell your zem or taxi driver "Plage de Fidjrossè" or "Carrefour Plage de Fidjrossé". Agree on the price before you go. If you are coming from the other side of town, start from a landmark the driver knows and say "towards the airport, then the beach".

What you can do there

Benin's tourism agency calls Fidjrossè "one of Cotonou's liveliest beaches, ideal for walking, running, socializing and admiring the sunset". This is a beach for the evening walk, the jog along the sand, the drink with friends and the photo at sunset more than for a long swim.

A good plan for a first visit:

  1. Arrive in the late afternoon, when the heat drops.

  2. Walk along the sand towards the sunset.

  3. Eat at one of the restaurants or maquis near the beach.

  4. Leave with the people you came with, before it is fully dark if you don't know the area.

Take the sea seriously

The waves and currents on the Cotonou coast are strong, and you should not count on a lifeguard being there. Swim only where you can see others doing it safely, stay close to the shore, and never swim alone or after drinking. Keep children within arm's reach in the water. If you are not a strong swimmer, enjoy the beach from the sand.

Where to eat nearby

Ceety Boy lists 24 restaurants, bars and maquis in the Fidjrossè neighbourhood, from small maquis to pubs and restaurants, each with the road route. The closest to the beach on the Ceety Boy map, in a straight line, are Resto plage and Regaebar (about 80 m), Ouaga doux gouts (about 120 m) and Chez kiki (about 130 m). Ceety Boy does not rank them or copy reviews, and opening hours change, so call before you go. More seafront places, west to east, are in the Ceety Boy guide to beaches and the seaside in Cotonou.

Where to stay nearby

If you want to wake up near the sea, Ceety Boy lists 14 hotels, guest houses and hostels in Fidjrossè. Several are within about 1.6 km of the beach by road, such as Akwa Guesthouse Cotonou and Blue White Benin Guesthouse. The list has no prices or ratings: contact the place before you come.

What is changing on the beach

In July 2023 the government announced works on the Marie-Stella to Adounko stretch of the coast, about 20.1 km long: a cycle path, a pedestrian promenade, kiosks with public toilets, parking areas, the rehabilitation of the old beach road and reinforcement of part of the new Route des Pêches. The works were planned to last 15 months. We could not confirm how far they have gone, so expect some sections to look different from older photos.

Who Fidjrossè is good for

  • Students who want a cheap evening out with friends.

  • Visitors with one free evening in Cotonou: it is close to the airport and easy to combine with Haie Vive.

  • Families on a weekend afternoon, with the warning above about the water.
