Why the Federal Government Blacklisted These Schools
In January 2024 the National Universities Commission (NUC) and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) jointly released an updated “Red-Flag Report” after an undercover journalist obtained a degree from a Benin Republic university in under two months and successfully registered for NYSC.
The investigation revealed:
22,700+ fake certificates already in circulation among Nigerian graduates.
“Certificate mills” operating without physical campuses or qualified faculty.
Some institutions renting classrooms and issuing transcripts for degrees never earned.
As a result, any university not on the newly published “safe list” is automatically considered blacklisted for 2025.
Official 2025 Blacklist (NUC & NYSC)
Red-Flag Rule: If a university is not among the five public universities and twenty private universities officially recognised on 26 August 2024, it is delisted.

How to Check If Your School Is Still Safe (Step-by-Step Screenshots)
Go to https://education.gov.ng → NUC → Accredited Universities.
Switch tab to “Foreign Institutions” → “Benin Republic”.
Type your university name exactly as it appears on your certificate.
Screenshot the result (green ✅ or red ❌).
Cross-check on the NYSC portal → https://portal.nysc.org.ng → Accredited Institutions.
