How much does it really cost to study in Benin Republic? The answer is more complicated than a single school-fee figure.
Your actual student budget can include tuition, registration and administrative charges, accommodation, food, transportation, books and learning materials, documentation, internet and data, travel, and personal expenses. The university, programme, city, study pathway and accommodation choice can change the total significantly. This is why Beninfo247 no longer recommends choosing a university from an old "school fees" table alone.
Tuition fee notice: university tuition, registration, accommodation and other fees can change during or between academic sessions. Any fee quoted in this guide should be treated as the amount verified at the stated date, not a permanent price. Before applying or making payment, contact the Beninfo247 Care Line on WhatsApp for the latest verified tuition, accommodation and admission fees.
There is no single national tuition fee for private universities in Benin Republic. Public universities, Francophone private institutions and English or international-oriented programmes can have very different fee structures. For 2026 planning:
Get the current fee schedule for the exact programme.
Ask what the quoted tuition does not include.
Calculate accommodation separately.
Budget monthly living and transport costs in CFA.
Check whether fees can change between sessions.
Nigerian students should check recognition and NYSC before choosing a programme simply because it is cheaper.
Before comparing prices, verify accredited universities and programmes.
Search Google and you will find many articles quoting exact tuition fees for Benin universities. The problem is that some of those numbers are years old. Others were published by admission agents, schools promoting themselves, blogs copying other blogs, or websites converting old CFA fees into Naira using obsolete exchange rates. A ₦500,000 fee quoted years ago may tell you very little about what a student will actually pay today.
For this reason, Beninfo247's 2026 approach is: verified current fee, then recent institution quote, then indicative range, then unsourced old number, in that order of trust. Where we cannot verify a current institutional fee, we will tell you to request the current fee schedule instead of pretending an old figure is current.
Suppose School A charges less tuition than School B. School A can still become more expensive if:
accommodation is far from campus;
transport is expensive;
the programme has additional laboratory or professional charges;
fees are paid in a currency that moves against your home currency;
you need extra documentation;
the programme takes longer;
or the qualification creates recognition problems later.
The cheapest tuition is not automatically the cheapest degree.
1. Public universities. Benin's national public universities operate within the government higher-education system. For Beninese students, government orientation, scholarship and aid systems can materially affect the cost of study. The Direction des Bourses et Aides Universitaires (DBAU) administers university scholarships and assistance, and its 2024–2025 statistics report 17,096 scholarships and 20,721 aids granted in Benin's public universities. Official source: bourses.enseignementsuperieur.gouv.bj. International students should not assume that they qualify for the same government support. Check the exact programme and applicable fee category.
2. Francophone private institutions. Benin has numerous private higher-education institutions operating primarily within its Francophone education market. Their tuition structures vary by institution, programme, level, professional or laboratory requirements, and academic year. They should be evaluated on their own terms rather than mixed automatically with English or international programmes targeting Nigerian students.
3. English and international-oriented options. This is often the most relevant category for Nigerian and other Anglophone students. These programmes can differ from traditional Francophone institutions in language, admissions support, international partnerships, degree-awarding structures, flexible study pathways, student support and payment plans. Beninfo247 will compare these options separately because that is how prospective Nigerian students actually make decisions. Where Beninfo247 has a commercial or partner relationship with an institution, that relationship will be disclosed while the factual comparison remains evidence-based.
Ask the institution for a written fee breakdown containing tuition, application fee, acceptance or admission fee, registration, examination charges, laboratory and practical fees, professional-body charges where applicable, student ID, graduation charges where known, transcript charges, accommodation and other compulsory payments. Then ask:
Is this per semester, per session or for the entire programme?
Can the fee change next session?
What is refundable, and what is non-refundable?
Can I pay in instalments?
Which account or entity receives payment?
What happens if my admission or programme changes?
These questions can reveal more than the headline tuition figure.
For many families, affordability is not "How much does the programme cost?" but "How much must I pay today?" Two programmes with similar annual fees can create completely different financial pressure if one requires full payment upfront and the other allows structured instalments.
Beninfo247's university comparisons will therefore include the total verified fee, minimum initial payment, instalment options, payment frequency, refund terms, currency and what is included.
Student accommodation in Cotonou and other university areas can include university residence where available, a school-arranged hostel, a private hostel, a shared apartment, a room or self-contained unit, a studio apartment, or a family or guardian arrangement. Do not assume every university has a hostel. Ask before enrolling:
Is accommodation owned by the school or a third party?
Is the fee monthly, semester-based or annual?
Are electricity and water included?
How many students share a room?
Is there security?
How far is it from lectures, and what transport is available?
Is there a refundable caution or deposit fee?
A cheaper room far from campus can become expensive when daily transport is added. A slightly more expensive room within walking distance can sometimes cost less overall. For each accommodation option, calculate rent + transport + utilities + time. That is a better comparison than rent alone.
In September 2026, Benin's Ministry of Higher Education announced the return of university transport serving routes across the four public universities. The announced student ticket price is 200 CFA, with tickets available through univservices.bj or USSD *611#. Official announcement: enseignementsuperieur.gouv.bj.
This is a useful example of why current government services should be checked when building a student budget. However, private-university and international students should verify whether a particular route or service applies to them.
Your food budget depends heavily on lifestyle. A student who cooks most meals will have a different budget from someone eating regularly in restaurants. Plan separately for groceries, drinking water, cooking gas or electricity, mobile data, laundry, personal care and emergency expenses.
Do not convert your entire budget into Naira months in advance and assume the conversion will remain accurate. Benin uses the West African CFA franc (XOF), so build your core Benin budget in CFA and convert to your home currency when you actually need to plan payment.
A very cheap programme can become extremely expensive if the qualification later creates problems for the purpose you intended. Before paying, ask:
Who awards the degree, and where is the awarding institution based?
Is the programme authorised?
How is the programme delivered, and what is the study duration?
What is the current Nigerian foreign-qualification position?
If NYSC matters, what do current Nigerian authorities require?
Read our guide and check NYSC and Nigerian recognition before choosing by price. A programme with a stronger, verifiable international pathway can sometimes be more valuable than the lowest advertised tuition.
Do not compare only tuition. Create a scorecard covering:
Accreditation or authorisation
Degree-awarding institution
Programme
Tuition
Initial payment
Instalment flexibility
Accommodation
Transport and location
Language
Study mode
Student support
Recognition in the destination country
NYSC implications for Nigerians
Programme duration
Total estimated cost to graduation
I verified the institution.
I verified the exact programme.
I know who awards the degree.
I received a current written fee schedule.
I know what tuition excludes.
I know the accommodation arrangement.
I understand payment and refund terms.
I verified the receiving account or entity.
I calculated total cost, not just the first payment.
I checked recognition and NYSC implications where relevant.
If you still need to understand the admission process, read how to apply to a university in Benin Republic, and check the Benin Republic university admission requirements.
Every institution-specific fee profile will show the institution, programme, academic year, tuition, other compulsory fees, minimum first payment, payment plan, accommodation, currency, source of fee, date verified and any relationship disclosure. If a fee cannot be verified, the page will say "current fee not independently verified" rather than manufacture a number. This creates a stronger information product than copied school-fee tables.
How much is university tuition in Benin Republic? There is no single national private-university fee. Tuition varies by institution, programme, level and academic year. Get the current written fee schedule for your exact programme.
Is university in Benin Republic cheap for Nigerians? Some programmes can be relatively affordable, but Nigerian students should compare total cost and recognition, not tuition alone. Exchange rates also change the Naira cost.
How much is accommodation in Cotonou? It varies significantly by location, room type, sharing arrangement and whether utilities are included. Request current options from the institution and compare them with independent local rentals before paying.
Do universities in Benin Republic have hostels? Some institutions have or arrange student accommodation; others rely largely on private housing. Verify the exact arrangement for your institution.
Can I pay school fees in instalments? This depends on the institution and programme. Ask for the current payment plan in writing.
What currency should I use to plan my budget? Use CFA (XOF) as the base for expenses incurred in Benin, then convert into Naira, dollars or another currency when needed. This prevents old exchange-rate conversions from making a plan misleading.
Should I choose the cheapest university? Not automatically. Compare accreditation, degree-awarding institution, programme, recognition, duration, accommodation and total cost to graduation.
Not chosen a university yet? Read our accredited universities guide.
Know the school and want to apply? See how to apply.
Need the admission documents? See the admission requirements guide.
Nigerian and NYSC or recognition matters? Read the NYSC guide.
