If you are researching universities in Benin Republic, the first thing to get right is a simple one: how many public universities does Benin actually have, and which ones are they?
Benin's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS) officially recognises four national public universities. This article lists all four, compares them side by side, and explains where other institutions you may have heard about, such as UADC, Sèmè City schools or the Écoles Inter-États, fit into the picture. It is a starting point: for full detail on any one institution, use the dedicated profile linked in each section.
According to current MESRS orientation and administrative materials, Benin has exactly four national public universities:
These four are grouped together consistently in official government materials, including the annual national orientation guide for new baccalaureate holders. If a source online lists a different number, check what it is counting. It may be including specialised inter-African institutions, government-recognised private universities, or professional schools that are actually faculties or institutes inside one of the four universities.
Université d'Abomey-Calavi (UAC). Location: Abomey-Calavi, near Cotonou. Type: large, multidisciplinary general university. Focus: nearly all fields, including law, medicine, science, engineering, humanities, economics and agriculture. Best for: students who want the widest choice of programmes in one place, or are undecided on a specialisation. Full profile: University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC).
Université de Parakou (UP). Location: Parakou, northern Benin. Type: multidisciplinary general university. Focus: medicine, agronomy, law, economics, humanities, statistics and nursing. Best for: students from or near northern Benin, or those who prefer a smaller multidisciplinary university outside the Cotonou area. Full profile: University of Parakou (UP).
UNSTIM. Location: main campus in Abomey, with schools also in Natitingou and historical ties to Lokossa. Type: thematic university focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Focus: engineering, industrial technology, biosciences and biotechnology, technical teacher training, and preparatory classes for engineering schools. Best for: students targeting engineering, applied science or technical teaching, including those willing to sit competitive entrance examinations (concours). Full profile: UNSTIM.
UNA. Location: official seat in Porto-Novo, with schools in other towns such as Sakété. Type: thematic university entirely focused on agriculture and allied sciences. Focus: aquaculture, horticulture, plant and seed systems, food science, rural engineering, animal production, agribusiness, rural sociology and tropical forestry. Best for: students targeting agriculture, agribusiness or rural development careers. Full profile: UNA (Université Nationale d'Agriculture).
They are created and governed directly by the Republic of Benin under state decree, under the authority of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
They operate on the Licence–Master–Doctorat (LMD) system.
They are primarily Francophone in language of instruction.
They are open to international students, including Nigerians, as foreign applicants.
They recruit mainly through Benin's national classement (ranking) system, though some programmes, particularly technical teacher training and certain engineering tracks at UNSTIM, recruit by competitive entrance examination (concours).
They carry the same caution on fees, accreditation and recognition: being an official public university in Benin is not the same question as whether a specific qualification will be recognised in Nigeria or elsewhere.
Breadth of programmes. UAC is by far the widest. UP is multidisciplinary but smaller. UNSTIM and UNA are thematic: UNSTIM is narrowly focused on STEM and technical teaching, UNA on agriculture, with no general faculties such as law, medicine or humanities.
Location. UAC sits near Cotonou, UP is in the north, UNSTIM's establishments are split across Abomey and Natitingou, and UNA's seat is in Porto-Novo, with schools elsewhere in the south-east such as Sakété, relatively close to the Nigerian border. This affects transport, accommodation costs and distance from Cotonou's international airport.
Admission mode. Most programmes across all four use classement, but a meaningful share of UNSTIM's programmes (technical teacher training, preparatory classes, some INSTI tracks) use concours. That changes what an applicant needs to prepare for.
Scale. UAC enrols far more students than the other three and has the most establishments, faculties and programmes.
A few other names come up often when people search for Benin's universities. They are real, but they are not part of the four national public universities:
UADC (Université Africaine de Développement Coopératif). A specialised inter-African institution in Cotonou, historically tied to the Pan-African cooperative movement, focused on cooperative economy, microfinance and development management. It generally admits on a fee-paying basis rather than through the national classement system. See our UADC guide.
Sèmè City establishments (such as Africa Design School, EPITECH and Sèmè City Institute of Technology and Innovation). These belong to a separate government-backed innovation and education hub with its own admission processes.
Écoles Inter-États (such as EISMV for veterinary medicine, EAMAU for architecture and urbanism, and ESMT for telecommunications). These are regional, multi-country institutions with their own admission processes, generally by competitive examination and country quota.
Government-recognised private universities and private higher-education establishments. Benin has a substantial private sector, separately licensed and regulated. Our top 10 private universities in Cotonou covers the options for English-speaking students.
Professional schools inside the four universities. Names like EPAC, ENEAM, FADESP, IFRI, ENSTP and ENSBBA are faculties, schools or institutes that belong to UAC, UNSTIM or UNA. They are not separate universities.
If you see a "top 10" or "top 15" list of Benin universities online, check which of these categories each entry actually falls into before treating them as equivalent.
It can be, but it depends on your programme, your career goals and your own verification of recognition requirements, not on the general reputation of "Benin universities". Before choosing any of the four, a Nigerian applicant should:
Confirm the exact programme is offered at the specific establishment, not just somewhere within the university.
Confirm whether admission is by classement or concours, and prepare accordingly.
Confirm the language of instruction and examination.
Check Nigerian recognition, NYSC and professional licensing requirements for the intended career. Note that since January 2024, Nigeria has suspended the accreditation of Benin and Togo degree certificates, which currently affects NYSC mobilisation.
Get a current fee quote rather than relying on an old list.
For the process, see how to apply to a university in Benin Republic. For verification, see accredited universities in Benin Republic. For the Nigerian side, read NYSC and Nigerian recognition for Benin Republic degrees.
Want the widest choice of subjects, or you are undecided? Start with UAC.
Want a multidisciplinary university outside the Cotonou area, especially if you are in northern Benin or Nigeria's northern border states? Consider UP.
Set on engineering, applied science, industrial technology or technical teaching, and open to an entrance exam? Consider UNSTIM.
Set on agriculture, agribusiness, aquaculture, forestry or rural development? Consider UNA.
Whichever you lean toward, verify the specific programme, fees and recognition questions directly rather than deciding on institutional reputation alone.
How many public universities does Benin have? Four: Université d'Abomey-Calavi (UAC), Université de Parakou (UP), UNSTIM and UNA.
Is UADC a public university in Benin? Not in the same sense as the four national universities. UADC is a specialised inter-African institution historically tied to the cooperative movement, generally fee-based.
Which is the best public university in Benin? There is no single best. It depends on the programme, location, admission mode and your career and recognition goals. UAC offers the widest range of subjects; UP, UNSTIM and UNA each specialise differently.
Which Benin public university is cheapest for Nigerians? Fees vary by programme, level and student category at all four and can change between sessions. Get a current quote for the specific programme you want.
Are Sèmè City schools the same as Benin's public universities? No. Sèmè City is a separate government-backed hub with its own institutions and admission processes.
Are EPAC, ENEAM, IFRI, ENSTP and similar names separate universities? No. They are faculties, schools or institutes belonging to one of the four national universities.
Can Nigerians study at any of Benin's public universities? Yes. All four accept international students, including Nigerians, as foreign applicants, subject to each university's requirements.
Before committing to one, confirm the specific programme is offered, the admission mode, a current fee quote, the language of instruction, and the Nigerian recognition and NYSC implications for your intended career.
