3 sure ways to get European Citizenship
Written by @Beninfo24/7

In general, you will need to live in the country for a certain number of years, gather proof of your eligibility to be a citizen, and submit an application. Most countries require that you live there for at least 5 years, although some may be longer.

For example, you must live in Germany for 8 years to get a passport. In France, you only need to be a resident for 5 years

If you examine your personal situation and ultimately decide that European citizenship is the solution to your needs, there are a few different ways to get European citizenship.

A second citizenship and passport ensure that, no matter what, you always have a place to go. To live, work, and to do business. To retire. And in some cases, even seek refuge.

Having European citizenship is particularly valuable because it will give you the right to live, work, and do business in all 28 European Union countries — like France, Spain, Germany, and Sweden.

If you’re not finding the right employment opportunities at home, for example, you can broaden your search to Europe. And if you have children, they would get access to the excellent European education system at a fraction of the price.

Now, obtaining second citizenship – whether in Europe or elsewhere – often takes time to establish, sometimes years. So, it’s advisable to start thinking about your options now.

Here are the three ways of how to get EU citizenship

Option #1: Get European Citizenship By Descent & Ancestry [The Cheapest & Easiest Way]

The first and easiest way to get European citizenship & passport is through your ancestry and descent.

You may be eligible for European citizenship by descent if you have parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents from Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and many other countries.

This type of citizenship is known as jus sanguinis and is commonplace across most of Europe.

One of the biggest benefits of citizenship by descent is that it often costs only a few hundred dollars in government fees and can usually be done in just a few months.

That’s why it’s an excellent option that we recommend EVERYONE considers first before pursuing any other way to get a second passport.

Option #2: Get European Citizenship Through Naturalization [Anyone Can Do This]

In most countries around the world, you can acquire citizenship by first becoming a legal resident, and then maintaining that residency for a certain number of years.

The required time is generally at least five years, but it can be as low as one year in certain cases. Many EU countries have language requirements before you can apply for citizenship. Some may require you to take a language course while others ask you to complete a basic language test.

And maintaining residency doesn’t always mean that you have to actually live full time there.

Also know that If your spouse is a citizen of an EU country, you may be able to apply for citizenship through them. Depending on where they have citizenship, marriage to an EU citizen might shorten the amount of time you need to live in the country before applying for citizenship.[3]

In Sweden, you normally need to live in the country for 5 years before applying for citizenship. If you are married or in a registered partnership with a Swedish citizen, however, you only need to live there for 3 years

Option #3: Get European Citizenship By Investment [The Quickest Option]

The final option is to buy citizenship in an EU country.

In scrambling for money, many governments are turning to sell citizenship to well-heeled foreign investors.

There are two types of programs:

Citizenship by Investment Options

This means you receive your European citizenship and Residence Permit very quickly and without having to reside in the country for several years first. But these options will also cost a lot more money.

(In Malta, for example, they require the main applicant to contribute €650,000 to the National Development and Social Fund (and €25,000 each for a spouse and minor children). This is a donation that you will not get back.

Plus, you must purchase a house with a value of €350,000 or rent for five years with an annual minimum of €16,000. Finally, you must invest at least €150,000 in government-approved financial instruments – stocks, bonds, etc.

This may seem a high hurdle to clear, but within 15 months of maintaining Maltese residency, you’ll obtain citizenship and a passport for visa-free travel to 169 countries. Plus, future generations will benefit… they are eligible for Maltese citizenship by ancestry.)

Golden Visas

This means the governments trade permanent residency in exchange for a significant investment (for example in real estate) and after several years of residency allow you to naturalize as a citizen. Spain and Portugal offer this program.

(Both the Spanish and Portuguese Golden Visas’ real estate investment minimum is €350,000… plus expect government and legal fees to add another €20,000-30,000, depending on your family size.

But, you’re not stuck with a half-million property just sitting there. In Portugal, for example, you can rent your residential or commercial property for income. Also, Portugal allows investors to combine the value of a number of properties to reach the required investment minimum for citizenship by investment.

After a total of five years in Portugal, you can apply for citizenship. In Spain, you have to be a resident for two years if you are a citizen of a former Spanish colony or ten years if you aren’t.)

A Golden Visa is significantly cheaper than citizenship-by-investment, but you still need to wait several years.

Many European countries, will let you earn citizenship by investing money in the government, but these usually require at least a million euros of investment.
